Full Job Description

National Highways have an exciting opportunity for a part time (3 days a week) Principal Engineer (Road Safety) to join our team in the South West region. The Principle Road Safety Engineer will lead and coordinate the delivery of Road Safety Audits, Post Fatal Collision Reporting, Collision Analysis, identification of safety need and development of solutions to resolve identified safety issues.
At National Highways you will have the opportunity to make real change for the customers that use and live alongside England's biggest road networks. You will support the delivery of the Safe Systems approach and work with internal and external stakeholders including Road Safety Partnerships to deliver interventions that will lead directly to a reduction in collisions.
You may be required to work unsociable hours as part of this role.
You will be required to drive as part of your role and you will need to have a full clean driving license to be considered for this position and during employment.
What you'll be leading on
+ Stage one, two, three and four audits in accordance with GG119.
+ Post fatal collision investigation reporting - ensuring we work collaboratively with the Stakeholders to establish the facts of the collision in the early stages of an investigation
+ Lead the development of feasibility studies for improvements and/or renewals, including the compiling and checking of relevant documents, evidence and options for value management, taking into account new techniques, technologies, buildability, and costs.
+ Identify and develop deliverable solutions to support IRAP star rating improvements to the Strategic road network (SRN)
+ Ensuring the health and safety needs and wellbeing of customers and employees are fully considered and accounted for throughout the planning and delivery of each service activity.
To be successful you'll need

+ A HND, HNC or to an equivalent operational standard/professional experience, a degree is not essential, along with relevant experience in road safety. Preferably you will have a membership of a relevant professional body such as ICE/CIHT/IHE, ideally actively working towards registration.
+ Must be able to undertake collision/incident analysis and identify risk areas in order to propose a remedy to resolve the identified problem. You will have experience in developing solutions to tackle those identified problems. You will be able to priorities schemes and develop a programme to deliver interventions.
+ You will have experience working with stakeholders and customers, helping them understand the needs and priorities of the relevant work area. You will be able to prioritise and communicate those priorities to internal and external stakeholders.
+ You will have experience in working on/with highways, in particular A roads and preferably Motorways. Your experience will include road safety activities such as dealing with collisions pre or post incident or experience of mitigating collision risk.
+ Knowledge of Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB) standards and their application on the highways network - in particular GG119
