Full Job Description

The Joint Norfolk and Suffolk Major Investigation Team is one of the specialist units that work within the Protective Services command. The directorates are collectively responsible for protecting Norfolk and Suffolk from harm, particularly those communities and individuals who are most vulnerable.

The Joint Major Investigation Team has offices in both Norfolk and Suffolk. The team constitutes eight PIP 3 SIOs at D/Supt, DCI and DI Level together with a mixture of Detective and Police Staff roles. The team investigate Major Crime, focusing on Murder and Manslaughter as well as a variety of other offences such as work related death and stranger Rape.

The Major Incident Room (MIR) review all documentation obtained during an inquiry. They record and link information in accordance with Major Incident Standardised Administrative Procedures (MIRSAP) and raise Actions to support the SIO's lines of enquiry.

Applications are invited for the above post in the Major Incident Room of the Joint Major Investigation Team based at Suffolk Constabulary Headquarters.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the first line management of five Indexers. They will ensure the work being completed by the Indexers on the HOLMES database has been prioritised appropriately, the instructions of the Document Receivers and Readers have been followed and the Indexing is of a consistently high standard. They will be expected to have a through theoretical and practical understanding of the functions carried out in a Major Incident Room with particular emphasis on managing/supervisory functions of the HOLMES database.

They will be expected to provide advice and feedback to all MIR staff and other JMIT staff

  • They will be expected to attend briefings held in support of the investigations and keep abreast of all developments across multiple investigations

  • They will be expected to maintain a high level of personal development to keep themselves aware of developing technologies and processes

  • They will be required on occasions to travel across both counties to support ongoing investigations

    Demonstrate the ability to show proven supervisory skills, including those of motivation, team work, and pride of performance

  • Demonstrate effective communication skills at all levels and to a wide range of audiences

  • Proven ability to use computer systems and a variety of software packages to include Microsoft Office Suite (e.g. Word, Excel

  • Demonstrate a practical and effective approach to problem solving with analytical skills

  • Have previous experience of using the HOLMES database

  • Have proven ability to prioritise workloads and to work using own initiative

  • Ability to travel as required throughout the County of the home force in which the post holder is based


  • It is desirable that applicants meet the following criteria:
  • Ability to travel to locations within the force area of any other Constabulary, forming part of the Joint Major Investigating Team

  • Previous experience and proven ability as a HOLMES Indexing Supervisor with knowledge of Incident Room procedures
